Winter Barley (Hordeum vulgare)

Winter Barley is a cool-season cereal grain valued for its rapid fall establishment, early spring growth, and earlier maturity compared to many other small grains. It produces upright grass plants with multiple tillers and grain-bearing seed heads, typically reaching 2–4 feet tall depending on growing conditions. Winter Barley performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and is well adapted to regions with mild to moderate winters. Widely used for grain production, livestock forage and wildlife food plots, it provides excellent early-season forage and soil protection. Its vigorous growth helps suppress weeds, reduce erosion, and add organic matter.
